Is Pico Laser Safe During Pregnancy? What I Tell My Patients

Is Pico Laser Safe During Pregnancy

One of the most frequent conversations I have in my clinic starts with a happy announcement. A patient tells me she is pregnant! I am always thrilled for them.

But then comes the look of concern. Is Pico Laser Safe During Pregnancy? They look at the Emkanat Discovery Pico machine standing in the corner of my room, and they ask: “Doctor, can I continue my sessions?”

Pregnancy changes your skin. The “pregnancy glow” is real, but so is melasma (often called the mask of pregnancy) and hormonal acne. It is natural to want to fix these things immediately.

However, as a medical professional, my priority is the safety of you and your growing baby. Today, I want to answer the main question: Is Pico laser safe during pregnancy? and clear up all the confusion around it.

Can You Have Pico Laser While Pregnant? The Short Answer

I will be direct with you. If you ask me “can you have pico laser while pregnant?” or “can you have pico while pregnant?“, my answer is no.

This might be disappointing. I know you want to keep your skin looking its best. The Discovery Pico is an incredible machine, and I rely on it for so many treatments. But when a patient is expecting, we pause everything.

The reason isn’t that we have proof it hurts the baby. The reason is that we don’t have proof that it is 100% safe.

Ethically, doctors cannot run clinical trials on pregnant women. Because we lack that definitive data, the global medical standard is to avoid elective laser procedures until after the baby arrives.

Breaking It Down by Trimester

Patients often try to negotiate with me. They ask if the timing makes a difference. Let’s look at the stages.

Is pico laser safe during pregnancy first trimester?

The first trimester is the most delicate time for fetal development. This is when the baby’s organs are forming.

I absolutely avoid any unnecessary stress, pain, or treatments during this time. The answer is a strict no.

Is pico laser safe during pregnancy second trimester?

You might feel more energetic now. However, the answer regarding is pico laser safe during pregnancy second trimester remains no. Even though the risk is theoretical, we do not take risks with your pregnancy.

Is pico laser safe during pregnancy third trimester?

You are in the home stretch. Your body is under a lot of physical stress. Lying flat for a procedure might be uncomfortable, and your skin is very sensitive due to blood volume changes.

So, regarding is pico laser safe during pregnancy third trimester, my advice is to wait just a little longer.

Can I Do Face Laser While Pregnant?

A common question I get is: Can I do face laser while pregnant? or generally, is laser on face safe during pregnancy?

Many women think that because the laser is only touching the face, it is far away from the belly, so it should be fine.

While the laser beam itself stays local, the procedure affects your whole body. Laser treatment causes a mild amount of pain or stress.

Pain releases stress hormones like cortisol. We want to keep your environment as calm and stable as possible.

Also, pregnancy hormones make your skin unpredictable. A laser setting on the Discovery Pico that worked perfectly for you last year might cause hyperpigmentation now because your hormones are raging. It is better to wait until your body balances out.

Don’t Panic: “I Had Laser Hair Removal While Pregnant”

Occasionally, a panicked patient calls me. They say, “I had laser hair removal while pregnant before I knew I was expecting! Is my baby okay?”

Please, take a deep breath. You are likely fine.
Laser light does not penetrate past the skin layers. It does not reach the uterus. The main reasons we avoid it are the lack of clinical studies and the risk of skin reactions.

If you had a session before you knew, just stop the treatments now and focus on your prenatal care. Do not let stress consume you.

Is Pico Laser Safe for Breastfeeding?

Once the baby is born, the questions change. Is Pico laser safe for breastfeeding?

Yes, generally, it is safer than during pregnancy. The laser energy does not go into your milk.
However, there is a catch. If we need to use a strong topical anesthetic (numbing cream) for your Discovery Pico session, we need to be careful. Some chemicals can enter the bloodstream and milk supply.

If you are breastfeeding, tell me. I can adjust the laser settings to be more gentle so we don’t need numbing cream, or we can pump and dump milk as a precaution.

Who Is Not Suitable for Pico Laser?

Pregnancy isn’t the only reason I might say no to a treatment. It is important to know who is not suitable for Pico Laser?

Aside from pregnant women, I will not treat you if:

  • You are currently taking Accutane (isotretinoin). You must wait 6 months after stopping.

  • You have an active infection or cold sore on the treatment area.

  • You have a history of keloid scarring (we need to be very cautious).

  • You have a fresh tan or sunburn.
